No Olympic medals, but USA women top FIFA rankings

Despite not reaching the medal round at the Rio Olympics, the United States women still lead the latest FIFA world rankings, which were released Friday morning.

The Americans remained atop the rankings although their lead over new Olympic champions Germany has been cut by more than half to their lowest-ever rating of 2,137 points.

The Olympics accounted for around 40 per cent of the 63 matches played in the last two months, with many of the remaining fixtures being friendly games.

Although the Swedes claimed their first Olympic medal with silver in Rio, the Scandinavians lost seven points in the rankings and remain in sixth place. Quarterfinalists Australia have dropped two places to seventh, while Olympic hosts Brazil fell to its lowest ranking of 10th place after missing out on the podium. Other top 10 nations that slipped were England and Japan, who dropped one position to fifth and eighth, respectively.

The USA was eliminated by Sweden in the quarterfinals by penalty kicks.

Canada’s bronze medal helped the Maple Leafs reach their highest position of fourth place.

By winning five of their six matches in the Olympics, the Canadians not only matched their achievement of claiming bronze at the London 2012 Olympics, but they have also been rewarded with a massive 93 point gain in the rankings to move up six places from 10th. This is also the first time that Canada have been in the top five, surpassing its previous high of seventh.

The Canadians' 93-point gain has also set a new record in the 13-year history of the ranking, surpassing the 87-point gain by Cameroon in July 2015 and the 80-point gain by Equatorial Guinea in December 2008.
