USA women top FIFA rankings

The timing could not have been any better.

On the day the United States national team was to be feted with a ticker-tape parade and given the keys to the city by New York City, the Americans ascended to the top spot in the FIFA women's soccer rankings.

They leaped over previously No. 1 ranked Germany, whom they dispatched in the semifinals of the Women's World Cup, 2-0.

The USA became the first team to win a championship for the third time as it routed defending champion Japan, 5-2, in the final in Vancouver, Canada on Sunday.

The Germans dropped to second place, followed by France, Japan, England, Brazil, Sweden, North Korea, Australia and Norway, which cracked the top 10.

Host Canada, which experienced a disappointing World Cup, fell out of the top 10, dropping to 11th place.

Cameroon made the biggest move, jumping 10 spots to 43rd.

The next rankings will be revealed on Sept. 25.
