SALES ON HOLD
11,000 pre-sale halts WNT public sale
CHICAGO - They really love women's soccer and hometown girl Abby Wambach in Rochester, NY. U.S. Soccer says it has received orders for more than 11,000 tickets through a pair of pre-sales for the US Women's National Team game on Sept. 1 at Sahlen's Stadium, so it has temporarily postponed a public sale which was scheduled to start Friday morning.
Official capacity at the stadium is listed as 12,500, but that figure includes seats in luxury suites. Last year after the U.S. fell in the final of the World Cup, a stadium record crowd of 15,404 turned out for a Women's Professional Soccer match between Wambach's magicJack team and the Western New York Flash, which featured Marta.
The Olympic Gold Medalists face Costa Rica in what is the first match of their celebration tour. The match kicks off at 2:30 p.m. ET and will be broadcast live on NBC.
U.S. Soccer says it is working with stadium officials to expand the venue's existing seating capacity and will announce the availability of additional tickets before they become available. Additional tickets will be sold through a general public sale.
The U.S. has announced two other matches in September, both of which will be against Australia. The first match will take place on Sept. 16 at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., with NBC broadcasting the match at 12:30 p.m. PT . The U.S. then heads to the Denver area for a rematch against Australia at 8 p.m. MT on Sept. 19 at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colo. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN2 and ESPN3, and ticket information will be available at a later date.
