TUKWILA, Wash. - You can scratch Clint Dempsey from participating with the United States national team for its next two World Cup qualifying games.

The Seattle Sounders announced Friday that the veteran striker would miss Sunday’s match in the Portland Timbers as he undergoes tests for an irregular heartbeat.

The 33-year-old Dempsey will be see team doctors to plan a course of action. His timetable to return is unclear.

The USA plays at St. Vincent and the Grenadines on Sept. 2 and hosts Trinidad & Tobago in Jacksonville Sept. 6 in WCA with a spot to reach the CONCACAF hexagonal on the lines.

Later in the day, ESPNFC.com's Jeff Carlisle reported that Dempsey would not be called those qualifiers.

Dempsey, the top American during the recent Copa America Centenario in which he led the team with three goals in six matches, has connected 52 times in 130 international appearances.

U.S. Soccer president Sunil Gulati said he spoke with Dempsey about the situation Friday.

“It’s something that we’ve been monitoring during the season,” Sounders general manager and president of soccer Garth Lagerwey was quoted by the Major League Soccer team's website. “We have Clint’s best interest at heart first and foremost. ... He’s been calm in our conversations with him. Anytime someone tells you something about your body then that’s an issue of some concern, but he’s been real mature and real professional about this.

“Everybody here, us, U.S. Soccer, Clint, we’re all on the same page as to getting to the bottom of this."
