Treasurer Carlos Cordeiro elected as U.S. Soccer VP


SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Carlos Cordeiro was elected as U.S. Soccer vice president at the federation's Annual General Meeting at the Marriott Rivercenter Saturday morning.

Cordeiro will serve a four year term as Vice President.

"I was overwhelmed by the support I received today from our membership," Cordeiro said in a statement. "Soccer is arguably enjoying its strongest period of success in recent memory, and I am honored to have been granted the opportunity to be involved with the Federation these past eight years. I look forward to taking on the challenge of serving as vice president and continuing to grow the game in all its forms here in the U.S."

Cordeiro joined U.S. Soccer in 2007 as an independent director. He was he first person to be appointed and ratified by the National Council for an independent director position of which there are now three.

During his tenure with the organizaton, Cordeiro volunteered for numerous roles, including serving as vice chair of U.S. Soccer's World Cup Bid Committee from 2008-10. He has served as U.S. Soccer treasurer since 2008 and chaired the federation's budget committee since 2011.

A retired finance executive, Cordeiro began his work in the sports industry in 2001, volunteering on the board of New York City's Olympic Bid Committee.

In other news from the National Council Meeting, Donna Shalala was reconfirmed as an independent director for a two-year term.

The AGM concludes with former women's national team and current University of North Carolina head coach Anson Dorrance being honored as this year's Werner Fricker Award winner.
