Red Stars draft Vasconcelos, Proffitt, Kaskie
The Chicago Red Stars selected BYU forward Michele Vasconcelos in the second round (11th overall) of the NWSL College Draft Thursday.
The Red Stars also took Marquette defender Morgan Proffitt with the 12th pick and UCLA midfielder Lauren Kaskie in the fourth round.
The Red Stars had five picks, but made deals to gain the 11th overall pick from the Boston Breakers in exchange for the Red Stars’ 2018 second-round draft pick and an international slot for the 2018 season; the 16th overall pick for Seattle’s first-round pick in the 2018 draft; and the 21st overall pick to Portland for the Thorns’ second and third round picks in 2018.
Vasconcelos was named WCC Player of the Year last season and was named to the All-WCC team four straight years, totaling 33 goals and 30 assists.
“I am honored to have been chosen by the Red Stars,” Vasconcelos said. “I always hoped I would be able to play professional soccer one day and it is surreal that the day has finally come. I am excited to join the team of extremely talented players and am grateful to have been given this opportunity by the club. My husband and I are excited to move to Chicago.”
Proffitt, Big East Conference Defensive Player of the Year last season, had 10 goals and three assists in 85 appearances in four seasons, gaining all-conference honors the last three seasons. Proffitt played for the U.S. U-23 national team in the Nordic Tournament last year.
“I feel like it’s a dream come true,” Proffitt said. “I spent the last two summers in Chicago on the Reserves team so it kind of feels like home away from home.”
Kaskie made 91 appearances in four seasons for UCLA, winning the NCAA title in 2013.
