Fire drafts 49ers' defender and midfielder


The Chicago Fire selected the University of North Carolina-Charlotte midfielder Brandt Bronico (47th overall) and defender Matej Dekovic (69th overall) on the second day of the MLS draft Tuesday.

Bronico, a High Point, N.C., native, appeared in 74 games, totaling 25 goals and 23 assists. Bronico, the Conference USA Player of the Year and Golden Boot Winner last season, led the conference in assist with 10 in 2015, fifth-highest total in program history.

Dekovic, from Zagreb, Croatia, totaled five goals and eight assists in 57 games in three seasons for the 49ers. Dekovic, a Conference USA All-Freshman Team honoree in 2014, garnered NSCAA First Team All-Southeast Region, was First Team All-Conference USA and NCCSIA First Team All-State last year.
