Fire sign Uruguayan Bava
BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. -- The Chicago Fire has signed Uruguayan goalkeeper Jorge Rodrigo Bava, the team announced Saturday.
Bava, 35, listed as a Discovery Player, signed a one-year deal with club options for 2018 and 2019.
"Bava is technically clean, comfortable off his line and a good organizer of the defense," Fire general manager Nelson Rodríguez said. "His skill set is complementary to that of Matt Lampson and we expect him to compete for playing time."
Bava appearing in 21 matches for Atlético Bucaramanga in Colombia’s Primera A last year.
Bava, born in Montevideo, began his professional career with C.A. Progreso in 1998, then went to Peñarol, Club Atlético Juventud de Las Piedras, Club Nacional de Football and Club Atlético Bella Vista. Bava re-joined Nacional in 2003, appearing in 58 matches as the team won the 2003 and 2004 Apertura titles. In 2005, Nacional won the Primera División and defeated Rocha for the 2005-06 title.
In 2007, Bava joined Club Libertad in Paraguay, appearing in 32 matches through 2012, and also appearing in 33 matches on loan to Atlas in Liga MX in 2008, plus six matches on loan to Argentina's Rosario Central during the 2010-11 season. Bava returned to Nacional for a third stint, appearing in 43 matches from 2012-15.
Bava played in one match for the Uruguay Under-23 team during 2004 Olympic Qualifying.
