Substitutes power El Tri past Honduras
SAN PEDRO SULA, Honduras--Mexico remained perfect in CONCACAF World Cup qualifying with a 2-0 win over Honduras Tuesday at Estadio Olimpico Metropolitano.
Substitutes Jesus Corona and Jurgen Damm scored to give head coach Juan Carlos Osorio his second win in as many games with El Tri. Mexico opened their qualifying campaign with a 3-0 win over El Salvador last Friday.
Both goals came well after Honduras lost midfielder Luis Garrido to a gruesome leg injury suffered during a collision with Javier Aquino in the 38th minute. Garrido, who played this season for the Houston Dynamo but has not yet had his option picked up for 2016, reportedly suffered both ACL and PCL ligament tears and damage to two other ligaments in his knee.
Neither team mustered much in the way of offense before the intermission. Mexico picked up the pace in the second half, but had trouble finding the target. Raul Jimenez missed the mark in the 55th minute, Javier Hernandez had a shot tipped away by netminder Noel Valladares and Raul Jimenez sent the rebound wide of the net.
Corona finally snapped the scoreless tie in the 66th minute. Minutes after taking the field, he volleyed home the game winner from the top of the penalty area.
Six minutes later, Damm stole the ball on the right flank and drove into the penalty area before catching Valladares off balance with a shot between the wrong-footed 'keeper and the post.
