Liguilla quarterfinals - First Leg roundup

#1 Monterrey 3, #8 Tigres 1
Top seeds Monterrey romped past #8 Tigres 3-1 in Wednesday's Liguilla quarterfinal first leg at Estadio Universitario.

Carlos Sanchez put the Rayados on the board in the 16th minute, one-touching a cross from Edwin Cardona. Rafael Sobis leveled things for Tigres three minutes later, with an assist from Damian Alvarez, but Dorlan Pabon put Monterrey in front for good with a 22-yard blast seven minutes before halftime. Rogelio Funes Mori added the insurance goal in the 84th. Edgar Castillo set the table with a pass back from near the endline.

The series concludes Saturday at Estadio BBVA Bancomer.

#6 Morelia 1, #3 Leon 1
Cristian Pellerano scored in the 61st minute to lift sixth-seeded Morelia into a 1-1 draw with #3 Leon in Wednesday's Liguilla quarterfinal first leg at Estadio Morelos.

Pellerano's goal countered a 50th-minute strike from Leon's Luis Montes, who latched onto a pass from Jose Vazquez. Pellerano leveled the score off the rebound after netminder William Yarbrough bobbled a shot from Eisner Loboa.

Leon was poised to take a 1-0 lead in the 12th minute, but Elias Hernandez sent his shot off the left post.

The Esmeraldas will host the series finale Saturday at Estadio Nou Camp.

#7 Santos Laguna 1, #2 Pachuca 1
Santos Laguna rallied to a 1-1 draw with second-seeded Pachuca in Thursday's Liguilla quarterfinal first leg match at Estadio TSM Corona.

Not long after Pachuca defender Omar Gonzalez blocked Luis Mendoza's shot off the goal line, Franco Jara staked the Tuzos to a 1-0 lead in the 42nd minute. Diego Gonzalez equalized in the 66th, and Santos held on for the draw despite losing starting goalkeeper Agustin Marchesin to an apparent shoulder injury in the closing minutes of the first half.

Pachuca will host the second leg match Sunday at Estadio Hidalgo.

#5 Chivas 0, #4 America 0
Fifth-seeded Chivas de Guadalajara played #4 Club America to a scoreless draw in Thursday's Liguilla quarterfinal first leg at Estadio Chivas.

Both teams finished with ten men on the field. America's Rubens Sambueza was the first to be sent off, after receiving his second yellow card of the match in the 60th minute. The Herd's Angel Zaldivar received a straight red in the 82nd after taking down Paul Aguilar.

Chivas netminder Rodolfo Cota picked off a pair of early long shots, while Edwin Hernandez forced America's Hugo Gonzalez to save a sharply-angled shot before the intermission.

America will host the winner-take-all second leg Sunday at Estadio Azteca.
