Tigres win Gran Final in pk thriller

Pumas 4, Tigres 1 a.e.t (Tigres win 4-2 in pks after 4-4 aggregate tie)
Tigres brought a 3-0 lead into Sunday's second leg of the Apertura championship finals, but needed 120 minutes and eight rounds of penalty kicks to claim their fourth title after top seeds Pumas rallied to a 4-4 aggregate draw.

Tigres took the tiebreaker 4-2. Israel Jimenez scored the clincher, and a miss by Pumas' Javier Cortes made the result official.

Undaunted by the long odds against them at the opening kickoff, Pumas dominated the action during regulation and started chipping away at Tigres' lead when Eduardo Herrera put away a rebound in the last minute of the first half. Substitute Fidel Martinez served the ball into the penalty area to allow Matias Britos to pull the regular season champs to within a goal at 3-2 with a header in the 55th minute, and Silvio Torales sent the match to extra time by eluding three defenders to score to make the Sunday score 3-0 in the 87th minute.

Tigres reclaimed the aggregate lead when Andre-Pierre Gignac connected in the 103rd minute, only to see Gerardo Alcoba keep UNAM alive into the tiebreaker with a 199th-minute strike to tie the aggregate score 4-4.

Both teams finished with ten men on the field. Pumas midfielder Eduardo Herrera collected two yellow cards in as many minutes and was sent off in the 90th minute. Ten minutes in the second extra time, Tigres defender Hugo Ayala, who received his first caution at the same time as Herrera, in the 88th minute, was ejected after receiving his second yellow card.
