LIGA MX CLAUSURA
Liguilla semifinals first leg roundup
Pachuca 2, Santos Laguna 0
Pachuca opened the Liguilla semifinals with a solid 2-0 lead over Santos Laguna Wednesday at Estadio Hidalgo.
Diego de Buen opened the scoring in the 44th minute, and Hugo Rodruguez doubled the Tuzos’ lead in the 63rd.
Oribe Peralta came close to giving the Guerreros an early 1-0 lead, but hit the crossbar in the 20th minute. The match appeared to be headed into halftime scoreless before de Buen slipped a long free kick past netminder Oswaldo Sanchez and into the upper right corner. Rodriguez poked home the capper after a flurry of blocked shots and rebounds in the penalty area.
Santos Laguna had one final attempt to shave the deficit to a single goal, but Nestor Calderon’s shot hit the crossbar.
Leon 1, Toluca 0
Leon defeated Toluca 1-0 in the opening match of their Liguilla semifinal series Thursday at Estadio Nou Camp.
The Esmeraldas can advance to the final with a win, tie or even a one-goal defeat provided they can notch a road goal in Sunday’s series finale at Estadio Nemesio Diez.
Luis Montes headed home a cross from the left side to clinch the win in the 23rd minute. Rafael Marquez threatened to double Leon’s lead with a shot from the top of the arc in the 74th minute, but netminder Cesar Lozano parried it away from the upper corner.
The Diablos made a game effort to equalize after the intermission, but could not find the mark. Francisco Gamboa missed high on a sitter in the 59th minute, and ‘keeper William Yarbrough blocked a hard shot by Raul Nava.
