Liguilla semifinals, 1st leg roundup
Toluca 2, Club America 1
Toluca edged Club America 2-1 in the opening of their two-game Liguilla semifinal series Thursday at Estadio Nemesio Diez.
The Diablos Rojos rallied from a 1-0 halftime disadvantage, snatching the win with two goals in six minutes. Isaac Brizuela knotted the score 1-1 on a breakaway in the 49th minute, countering a 33rd-minute strike by America’s Luis Gabriel Rey. Edgar Benitez blasted the clincher home from the corner of the penalty area in the 55th.
The series concludes Sunday at Estadio Azteca.
Leon 3, Santos Laguna 1
Leon ran up a three-goal lead, and held on to defeat Santos Laguna 3-1 in Thursday’s first-leg Liguilla semifinal at Estadio Nou Camp.
Leon seized the early momentum, with Carlos Pena sending Santos netminder Oswaldo Sanchez diving for a save off the opening kickoff. Jose Vasquez staked the Esmeraldas to a 1-0 lead in the 34th minute, forcing a turnover and sending a long shot dipping into the upper corner. Carlos Alberto Pena made the score 2-0 three minutes before the intermission, snagging the rebound after Sanchez blocked a shot by Matias Britos. Franco Arizala put the Guerreros in a three-goal hole with 20 minutes left on the clock.
Javier Orozco’s stoppage-time header took a goal back for Santos Laguna, who host the second leg Sunday at Estadio TSM Corona.
