Tijuana 3, Atlas 3
The Apertura season kicked off in spectacular fashion with a 3-3 draw between Tijuana and Atlas Friday Estadio Caliente.

Dario Benedetto had a hat trick in his Xolos debut, connecting in the 6th, 17th and 64th minutes, the first coming off a defensive error and the second developing from an Atlas turnover. Paced by Vicente Matias Vuoso with two goals and an assist, Atlas twice rallied from two goals down, and salvaged their first point of the tournament with an 83rd-minute equalizer by Edson Rivera. Matias Vuoso put the Zorros on the board with a penalty kick in the 29th minute, and kept them within a goal from just inside the penalty area in the 69th before setting the table for Rivera with seven minutes left on the clock.

Morelia 3, Queretaro 1
Monarcas Morelia ran up a three-goal lead on their way to a season-opening 3-1 win over Queretaro Friday at Estadio Corregidora.

Edgar Andrade opened the scoring on a counterattack in the 27th minute. Jefferson Montero doubled Morelia’s lead seconds after halftime, beating ‘keeper Edgar Hernandez one-on-one, and Hector Mancilla opened his scoring account in the 73rd, eluding multiple defenders and powering a shot past Hernandez.

Mario Osuna saved the Gallos Blancos from a shutout with a header in the 87th minute.

Cruz Azul 1, Monterrey 0
Rogelio Chavez converted a penalty kick in the 53rd minute to give Cruz Azul a 1-0 win over visiting Monterrey in Friday’s Apertura opener at Estadio Azul.

Chavez stepped to the spot after Jesus Zavala handled the ball in the area. It was Cruz Azul’s second penalty kick of the match. In the 15th minute, Rayados ‘keeper Juan de Dios Ibarra fouled Joao Rojas, but Mariano Pavone’s shot missed the target.

La Maquina will be without defender Gerardo Torrado next week after he received the first red card of the season in the 83rd minute.

Veracruz 2, Jaguares 2
Newly-promoted Veracruz played Jaguares to a 2-2 tie in their Apertura debut Saturday at Estadio Luis Pirata Fuentes.

Aviles Hurtado gave Jaguares a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute. The teams traded second-half penalty kicks, starting with Luis Tejada’s 53rd-minute conversion for the Tiburones Rojos. Hurtado restored Jaguares’ lead on the 84th, but Angel Reyna, who was fouled to set up Tejada’s spot kick, came through in stoppage time to level the score for Veracruz.

Leon 1, Atlante 0
Mauricio Castaneda scored the only goal Leon need to edge shorthanded Atlante 1-0 Saturday at Estadio Nou Camp.

Potros forward Francisco “Kikin” Fonseca put his team behind the eight ball early, collecting yellow cards in the first and tenth minutes to leave Atlante shorthanded. Both of Fonseca’s fouls were committed on Leon’s Rafael Marquez.

Franco Arizala set up Castaneda’s game-winner with a sharp pass back from the byline.

Puebla 1, Pumas 1
Puebla needed an 88th-minute goal by Gustavo Alustiza to pull out a 1-1 draw with Pumas Sunday at Estadio Cuauhtemoc.

Alustiza’s strike countered Martin Bravo’s go-ahead goal for Pumas, a tap-in off Candido Ramirez’s assist in the 28th minute.

Felix Borja set the equalizing play in motion with a pinpoint service to Alustiza, who scored into the far side of the net.

Pachuca 1, Toluca 0
Othonial Arce snapped a scoreless tie in the 78th minute and gave Pachuca their first win of the Apertura, 1-0 over Toluca Sunday at Estadio Nemesio Diez.

Arce right-footed home the game-winner two minutes after entering the match for starter Duvier Riascos.
