MEXICAN LEAGUE CLAUSURA
Stunning championship comeback for Club America
CLUB AMERICA 2, CRUZ AZUL 1 (America wins in pks)
Playing with only ten men from the 13th minute, Club America rallied from two goals down to take the Liguilla championship 4-2 in penalty kicks over Cruz Azul Sunday before a rain-drenched crowd of 100,000 at Estadio Azteca.
The aggregate goals series ended in a 2-2 tie after regulation and extra time. The pk win left America tied with Chivas with a record 11 league championships.
La Maquina brought a one-goal aggregate lead into Sunday’s final match, and doubled the advantage when Teofilo Gutierrez scored in the 20th minute. That goal, plus a 13th-minute red card to Aguilas defender Jesus Molina, left things looking bleak, but America defied the odds.
Aquivaldo Mosqera pulled America within one with an 89th-minute header, and La Maquina defender Alejandro Castro completed the Aguilas’ resurrection with an own goal after America netminder Moises Munoz put a diving header on goal off a corner kick in the third minute of stoppage time.
Neither team scored in extra time, sending the series to penalty kicks. After Munoz blocked Javier Orozco’s initial attempt with his foot and Castro sent his shot high, Miguel Layun netted the game-winner for America.
