MEXICAN LEAGUE CLAUSURA
Liguilla semifinals – second leg roundup
America 2, Monterrey 1 (America advances, 4-3)
Second-seeded Club America qualifies for the Liguilla finals with Saturday’s 2-1 win over Monterrey at Estadio Azteca.
The Aguilas won the aggregate-goals series 4-3, and will face Cruz Azul in la Gran Final.
Raul Jimenez converted a penalty kick for America in the 64th minute, and set the table as Christian Benitez made the score 2-0 in the 82nd. Aldo Di Nigris pulled one back for the Rayados in stoppage time, but it was not enough to move them ahead.
Cruz Azul 2, Santos Laguna 1 (Cruz Azul advances, 5-1)
Cruz Azul roared into the Liguilla Gran Final with a 2-1 win over shorthanded Santos Laguna Sunday at Estadio Azul.
La Maquina took the aggregate-goals semifinal series 5-1.
Both teams got their scoring out of the way early. Javier Orozco bolstered Cruz Azul’s already-formidable aggregate lead with a brace in the seventh and 25th minutes. The first goal was set up by Rodolfo Salinas with a header. Orozco chested the second ball into the net off an assist by Pablo Barrera. Andres Renteria’s 36th-minute strike, neatly banked off the post and in, saved the Guerreros from a semifinal shutout, but did nothing to change the outcome.
Santos played most of the second half shorthanded, after Darwin Quintero received his second yellow card and was sent off in the 48th minute. Three minutes later, a straight red to Felipe Baloy laft the Guerreros with only nine men on the field.
Cruz Azul faces Club America for the Clausura championship.
