MEXICAN LEAGUE CLAUSURA
Liguilla semifinals – first leg roundup
America 2, Monterrey 2
Second-seed Club America and #9 Monterrey opened their Liguilla semifinal with a 2-2 draw Wednesday at Estadio Tecnologico.
Humberto Suazo gave the Rayados a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute, burying a free kick, but America’s Christian Benitez responded with a brace in the 50th and 70th minutes. Aldo di Nigris drew Monterrey level three minutes later. Both de Nigris and Benitez had solid chances to snatch the win, only to be rejected by their opponent’s goalkeeper.
The series concludes Saturday at Estadio Azteca.
Cruz Azul 3, Santos Laguna 0
Cruz Azul took a quick two-goal lead, then were gifted a late own goal to defeat Santos Laguna 3-0 Thursday at Estadio TSM Corona.
The result gives the Guerreros a daunting lead going into the home portion of their Liguilla semifinal series on Sunday.
Gerardo Flores opened the scoring in the second minute, heading the ball past netminder Oswaldo Sanchez off a long throw-in. In the 24th minute, Pablo Barrera doubled the lead with a stunning shot to the upper corner.
Netminder Jose de Jesus Corona came up big for the visitors, turning away dangerous shots by Darwin Quintero in the 24th and 78th minutes.
Santos Laguna defender Rafael Figueroa added to his team’s difficulties by mis-hitting a clearance into his own net in the 88th minute.
