Buffalo, Detroit notch first wins

Buffalo opens with a win
The FC Buffalo Blitzers opened their 2013 account with a 2-1 win over Zanesville Athletic FC in front of close to 500 fans at Robert E. Rich All-High Stadium.

Richie Wilson opened the scoring off a deft pass from Andy Tiedt to make the score 1-0 in the 39th minute.

Tiedt turned collector just after halftime, latching onto a 50-yard pass from Ryan Walter and burying a half-volley to make the score 2-0.

ZAFC halved their deficit in the 85th minute when John Barr put a long rebound into the back of the net.

Sparta crashes Cleveland, stopped by Detroit
Jesus Ginez and FC Sparta Michigan spoiled AFC Cleveland’s home opener on Friday night with a sneaky goal in the 89th minute. The goal gave the visiting side a 1-0 victory in their first-ever NPSL game.

“They played it in,” Ginez said when asked about his goal. “It kind of bounced around there. I just hit it with my right foot.”

Detroit City FC dominated FC Sparta Michigan 5-1 on Sunday at Berkley’s Hurley field.

In the 21st minute, Cyrus Saydee picked the pocket of a Sparta defender at the top of the box and slipped a pass through to midfielder Latif Alashe, who promptly placed the ball in the bottom left corner, past Sparta ‘keeper Adrian Motta.

Just two minutes later, Zach Myers fired the ball into the back of the net to make it 2-0.

In the 56th minute, Zach Schewee sent a pass down the left sideline to the speedy Myers. Motta wasn’t able to handle Myers’s initial strike, and the Division II Player of the Year promptly corralled the rebound and knocked the ball home for his second goal and a 3-0 City lead.

Le Rouge netted another goal just two minutes later. This time, forward Knox Cameron sniped in a cross from inside the box by Harris. With a 4-0 lead by the 58th minute, Detroit City was well on its way to notching its first victory of the season.

Sparta broke through on a deflection off of a corner kick for its lone goal on the second of their two shots in the game.

With the second half coming to an end, Alashe found Cameron for the striker’s second goal in his 29 minutes on the pitch.

Ready the Rusty Belt
Detroit City FC will host AFC Cleveland this Friday the 17th at 6:30pm CT at Cass Tech HS in the first game of this season’s Rust Belt Derby. The Rust Belt Derby participants are Detroit City FC, AFC Cleveland and FC Buffalo. The trophy is given to the team with the highest point total in those three teams’ head-to-head matches. Last year, eight points was good enough for AFC Cleveland to snatch the first-ever title.

Alone at the top
Santa Clarita Storm defeated Las Vegas Stallions F.C. 3-0 Saturday night at Harry Welch Stadium to move into sole possession of first place in the South West Conference standings.

In the72nd minute, the Storm's newly-signed Juan Camacho collected the ball and laid a pass right to the left foot of Alex Harlley, whose well-placed shot that found the back of the net. One minute later, Jose Esquivel took the ball 25 yards and placed it to the far post. In the 79th minute, Esquivel assisted on Andres Bueno's goal.

Stormy opener
After having their home opener cancelled once because of weather, Jacksonville United FC had to sit through a storm and lighting delay before finally getting their opener in on Saturday night, a 1-0 loss to Myrtle Beach FC in a friendly that does not count in the league standings.

With the weather as a backdrop, the game itself turned into a bit of a stormy affair, with multiple yellow cards in the first half, including a second to Myrtle Beach's Cameron Burros in the 45th minute.

In the eighty-fifth minute Myrtle Beach was able to score against the run of play as substitute Robert Bass tucked away a one-v-one.
