Morris powers Seattle to Western Conference crown
Western Conference Finals, 2nd Leg
SEATTLE SOUNDERS FC 1, COLORADO RAPIDS 0 (Seattle wins 3-1 on aggregate)
COMMERCE CITY, Colo.-- MLS Rookie of the Year Jordan Morris scored the only goal Seattle Sounders FC needed to defeat the Colorado Rapids 1-0 Sunday at Dick's Sporting Goods Park and sail through to the MLS Cup Final by a 3-1 aggregate score.
Sunday's clincher was Morris's second goal of the series. The Sounders will face the winner of Wednesday's (Nov. 30) Eastern Conference second leg between the Montreal Impact and Toronto FC for the league championship on Dec. 10.
Morris, who reportedly was sidelined for much of the past week battling a virus, beat goalkeeper Zac MacMath one-on-one after Nelson Valdez picked off Jared Watts' header in the backfield. Valdez threaded a pass through to Morris, who easily outran Axel Sjoberg into the box.
Colorado were their own worst enemies in the attacking end, failing to put even one of their 16 shots on goal. They arguably should have had a penalty kick in the 66th minute, when Marlon Hairston's low shot stopped short against the hand of sliding defender Chad Marshall, but referee Ricardo Salazar ruled the contact unintentional.
