MLS PLAYOFF UPDATE
All teams are set, places are not
NEW YORK – Vancouver Whitecaps FC clinched a berth in the 2012 MLS Cup playoffs by virtue of Seattle Sounders FC defeating FC Dallas 3-1 Sunday. The Whitecaps are the tenth and final team to make the playoffs.
Despite falling to the Portland Timbers 1-0, the Whitecaps have earned 42 points throughout the season and still have one game remaining. FC Dallas have earned 38 points across 33 games and therefore with one game still to play, they will be unable to overtake the Whitecaps in points.
Sunday's results ensured that Real Salt Lake will take on Seattle Sounders FC in the Western Conference Semifinals beginning on Nov. 3. Exact seeding, game times and broadcast information have yet to be determined.
Vancouver will travel to Southern California to play MLS Cup holders LA Galaxy in the Western Conference First Round Knockout match on Wednesday, October 31, or Thursday, November 1. The winner will face San Jose.
While all five teams in the east have been decided, none of the placements has been.
