A look at the upcoming game
Colorado Rapids (8-16-2, 26 pts)@ Portland Timbers (6-13-6, 24 pts), 9:30 pm CT (NBCSN)
The Colorado Rapids and Portland Timbers open a home-and-home series Friday night at Jeld-Wen Field. The Rapids are winless in three straight after Saturday’s 4-1 blowout in San Jose, and have only one win in their last ten games, a skid that has left them only two points above the last-place Timbers in the MLS West. Forward Omar Cummings missed the Quakes match with a gimpy right ankle, but is working to be back in the lineup against the Timbers. The Rapids’ biggest problem, however, has been defense. They have surrendered eight goals in the last three games, and 40 over the course of their 26 games. The Timbers had better luck last weekend, finally giving interim coach Gavin Wilkinson his first win, 2-1 over Vancouver. Ironically, it came days before the team announced Wilkinson’s permanent replacement, the University of Akron’s Caleb Porter, who will join the team for next season. Darlington Nagbe scored against the Caps to become the first Timbers player ever to put together a three-game MLS scoring streak, but Franck Songo’o won the game with his first goal of the season.
