World Cup final most watched ever

The 2014 World Cup was the most watched ever on U.S. television and Sunday's Final between Germany and Argentina was the most-watched Men's World Cup final ever, setting records for both ABC and Univision.

The game's combined audience topped the viewership for the deciding game of the 2013 World Series on Fox (19.2 million) the recent NBA Finals on ABC (18.0 million), and the BCS Championship game in college football on ESPN in January (25.6 million).

Based on Nielsen fast nationals, the ABC telecast averaged 17,324,000 viewers and a 9.1 US HH rating for the game window (3-5:44 p.m. ET). It also ranks as the third most-viewed World Cup game Ė menís or womenís Ė in the United States behind ESPNís coverage of this yearís USA vs. Portugal match ever (18,220,000 viewers) and the 1999 FIFA Women's World Cup Final on ABC (USA vs. China with 17,975,000 viewers).

The game on Univision Deportes was the most-viewed World Cup final in U.S. Spanish-language TV history, averaging 9.2 million viewers, making the combined audience for the telecast 26.5 million. IN addition, the final match on WatchESPN generated 1,800,000 live unique viewers.

At its highest point, the ABC telecast averaged 20,781,000 viewers and an 11.0 US HH rating from 5 to 5:30 p.m.

ESPN's coverage of the Brazil-Netherlands third place match on Saturday delivered 4,747,000 viewers, while Univision's coverage averaged 5.6 million Viewers

ESPN, ESPN2 and ABC combined to average 4,557,000 viewers for the 64 games, while Univision reached a record 80.9 million total viewers, up 65% from 2010.
