UIC Flames men capture MVC title
DAYTON, Ohio -- Oscar Rivero headed in a Max Todd corner kick in the 86th minute to give the UIC Flames a 1-0 win over Wright State in the Horizon League tournament championship game at Alumni Field Saturday night.
UIC (9-7-5) won its fourth tournament title (1999, 2000, ’07) and earned its sixth berth (1999, 2000, ’06, ’07, ’08) in the NCAA Men’s Championship.
"First, I want to congratulate Wright State (11-6-3)," UIC coach Sean Phillips said. "Coach (Bryan) Davis has done a tremendous job with this program and they had an outstanding year. They deserve all of the accolades they have earned, individually and collectively, this season.
"To win this game tonight, our guys had to put in a championship effort and that's exactly what they did. We knew Andrew (Putna) and the defense were going to need to step up, and they did. It's always great to watch seniors play their best soccer in games like this. They were pivotal tonight in helping us get a very well-deserved win. Now we look forward to representing the Horizon League in the NCAA Tournament."
Rivero was named tournament MVP and the Flames’ Oscar Gonzalez, Putna and Todd were named to the all-tournament team.
