HORIZON HONOR
UIC Aleksov Offensive Player of the Week

INDIANAPOLIS–After scoring three goals in two games, including a pair of game-winners, UIC junior Slobodan Aleksov was named the Horizon League Offensive Player of the Week

The Belgrade, Serbia native scored two goals in the first seven minutes of UIC’s win over intra-city rival Loyola last Wednesday (10/10/12). The goals were the first two of his career with the first coming on a left-footed blast and following up 90 seconds later with a finish off his right foot.

In the Flames’ road win at Drake (10/13/12), Aleksov netted the game-winner in the 75th minute, converting a strike from the top of the 18-yard box. The victory moved UIC to 5-1-1 over its last seven matches.

“Slobodan’s play over the past week in games has been tremendous,” said UIC head coach Sean Phillips. “It is great to see someone who continued to train incredibly hard this season while not playing a large number of minutes, earn an opportunity and take advantage of it this past week. We are looking forward to his continued contributions as we move into the final three weeks of the Horizon League’s regular season.”

Aleksov’s three goals moved him into a tie as UIC’s second-leading scorer. Both of his goals against Loyola were assisted by freshman Kyle Lindberg, and the game-winner against the Bulldogs was an unassisted score. He is the third UIC player this season to be honored by the League office – senior Ivan Stanisavljevic was tabbed the Horizon League Offensive Player of the Week on Aug. 27, while junior Zach Kaleta collected Defensive Player of the Week honors on Oct. 1.
