Northwestern women win NCAA opener
EVANSTON, Ill. -- The Northwestern Wildcats earned their 16th shutout of the season, taking a 3-0 victory over Kent State, in the first round of the NCAA Women’s Championship at the Lanny and Sharon Martin Stadium Saturday.
Northwestern (15-2-4), which improved to 10-0-2 at home in earning its fourth successive home shutout (479 consecutive shutout minutes), will meet SIU-Edwardsville in the second round in Durham, N.C. The Golden Flashes (15-3-2) had a four-game winning streak snapped.
Sophomore Marisa Viggiano set up the first goal with a corner kick, All-Big Ten Conference first teamer Kayla Sharples heading in in the 18th minute. Two minutes later, Nandi Mehta converted a penalty kick. Kassidy Gorman scored the final goal, charging into the penalty area to finish a Rachel Zampa cross from the left off a Viggiano setup in the 83rd minute.
