COLLEGE BOOT SPOTLIGHT: TANNER THOMPSON
Meet the Candidates, and Vote!
Indiana senior midfielder Tanner Thompson is one of three nominees for the Chicagoland Soccer News menís college player of the year and the Soccer News Net Menís College Boot, recognizing the national player of the year.
Thompson, who became the first two-time Big Ten Conference Midfielder of the Year, led the Hoosiers with eight goals (four game-winners) and three assists in 21 games. Thompson scored IUís first hat trick since Nikita Kotlov (4-0 win over Xavier) Nov. 18, 2012 in a 5-0 win over Saint Louis in October. Thompson was named to the NSCAA All-America First Team for the second time and all-conference first team for the third successive year. Thompson was joined by teammate Grant Lillard on the All-Big Ten and NSCAA All-Midwest Region first teams. Thompson was named a MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist as IU (12-2-7) reached the third round of the NCAA tournament.
Thompson, who led the Hoosiers with six goals in 2014 and nine assists in 2015, followed in the family footsteps to IU. Thompson is the son of Gregg Thompson, Indiana co-captain and scorer of both goals in a 2-1 extra time win over Duke in the 1982 NCAA title game before going on to play for the U.S. national team. One brother, Tommy, a San Jose Earthquakes forward, played for Indiana in 2013, and another, Ty, competed for Stanford.
Thompson was named the Chicagoland Soccer News Player of the Week for the weeks of Oct. 17 and 31.
