SECOND HALF SURGE
Hoosiers come back to win 3-2

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Indiana saw its fortunes change in a five-minute span, going from a 2-0 deficit to a 3-2 lead in a victory over the Oregon State Beavers Sunday afternoon at the Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament played at Notre Dame.

The Hoosiers improve to 4-1-1, while Oregon State falls to 2-2-1.

“Great comeback win for our team today,” said Indiana head coach Todd Yeagley. “I am really proud how they fought back being down 2-0 against a really good team. That is a talented attacking group from Oregon State.”

Trailing 2-0, the Hoosiers finally made their way onto the scoreboard in the 62nd minute. It was junior midfielder A.J. Corrado’s first goal of the year that cut the Oregon State lead in half. A shot by freshman Andrew Oliver was covered up by OSU goalkeeper Matt Bersano but he could not hang onto it. It was sent back out to the right to Corrado, who snuck it under Bersano to the far post for the score.

Goal number two came just over two minutes later with the sixth of the season from sophomore Eriq Zavaleta. Freshman Femi Hollinger-Janzen took control of the ball 25 yards out in the middle of the field. A pass to junior Harrison Petts on his right pinged off a defender, but Petts was still able to get service to the far post, where Zavaleta headed home the goal.

The Hoosiers continued to pressure the Oregon State defense and came up with the go-ahead score in the 66th minute. Corrado sent a corner kick into the mixer, and an Oregon State defender’s attempt to clear it instead went in for the own goal.

Hollinger-Janzen nearly added to the lead as the match wound down, putting some heat on a shot from the right to the far post that curled just left of the net. In the final three minutes junior Nikita Kotlov had ashot that was blocked in the box, and Zavaleta’s shot off the rebound went wide.

Indiana looked strong at the start of the match as Petts made his way down the left wing less than two minutes in, but his cross into the box was too high for Zavaleta to get his head on.

Mikhail Doholis had a point-blank shot for the Beavers from close range but goalkeeper Luis Soffner was up to the task, knocking down the attempt for the save. A minute later, in the 19th, it was Alex Penny putting Oregon State on the board, catching Soffner off his line.

Roberto Farfan added to the Oregon State lead in the 24th minute as the Hoosiers quickly found themselves down 2-0. Five of the Beavers’ first seven shots were on frame.

With nine minutes to play in the first half, Hollinger-Janzen got the ball with his back to the goal, turned and shot, which was saved by Matt Bersano. Just prior to that play, Zavaleta nearly got on the end of a Doody cross from the left wing.

Oliver had a shot curl wide right after he was played the ball from Zavaleta in the middle of the field. In the 54th minute, Petts was open in the box and Bersano came out to try and take the ball off his foot. The ball spilled lose and Oliver was there to take a shot on what looked to be an open net, but an Oregon State defender stepped in for the last-minute kick save.

The Hoosiers out-shot the Beavers 15-12 advantage. All three of Luis Soffner’s saves came in the first half, while Basano finished with five saves, three of which came in the second half.

Indiana return home to face SIU-Edwardsville on Friday, Sept. 14 at 7:30 p.m. ET.
