DROPPED BY DUKE
ISU Redbirds eliminated by Blue Devils
DURHAM, N.C. -- Illinois State’s 15-game unbeaten streak was snapped as the Redbirds fell, 3-1, to Duke in the second round of the NCAA Women’s Championship Friday night.
The Redbirds (14-6-3) fell behind late in the first half, then equalized on Brooke Ksiazek’s 74th-minute goal, before surrendered two late goals to the Blue Devils (14-4-3).
Toni Payne scored twice, giving Duke the lead as she went in alone on Haley Smith in the 42nd minute. Ksiazek converted from close range off a volleyed pass from Lauren Koehl from a Kelli Zickert corner kick, her first goal of the season.
Payne broke the deadlock with a shot from the top of the penalty area in the 77th minute, then Casey Martinez scored on a 78th-minute free kick, Duke outshooting the Redbirds, 27-2.
