FLYING TO THE FINALS
Illinois State Redbirds stop Sycamores
NORMAL, Ill. -- The Illinois State Redbirds improved their unbeaten streak to 13 games with a 1-0 extra time victory over Indiana State in the semifinals of the Missouri Valley Conference tournament Friday night.
MVC player of the year Lauren Koehl scored her 15th goal of the season in the 99th minute for the Redbirds (13-5-2), who will meet Evansville in the final at the Adelaide Street Field at 1 p.m. CT Sunday. Koehl scored off a Kiley Czerwinski corner kick as Illinois State outshot the Sycamores (7-11-2), 19-5.
"They did a lot of things to make it difficult for us to score, they played with basically 11 players behind the ball,” Redbird coach Eric Golz said. “Credit goes to them, I thought they were very well organized and they defended very well as a team. At the end of the day, we found a way. We knew we weren't going to get a picturesque opportunity to score a goal. We made something out of nothing and Koehl's been doing that all year and she did another great job of doing it again today.
"We are extremely confident in our team and in our group. We know if plan A isn't working we'll go to plan B and if plan B isn't working we'll go to plan C. We'll find a way."
