Fighting Illini finish in 11th place in Big Ten
EVANSTON, Ill. -- The Illinois Fighting Illini closed the season in 11th place in the Big Ten Conference, falling, 1-0, in extra time to Northwestern Wednesday night.
Illinois (6-11-2 overall, 3-6-2 conference) threatened in the opening half in wet, windy conditions, with shots by Tailor Smith, Ellie Ordonez and Taylore Peterson. In the second half, Katie Murray and Patricia George put shots on net early, then junior Emily Osoba hit the near post with her first shot of the season in the 62nd minute.
Kayla Sharples scored off a corner kick in the 98th minute as Northwestern (14-1-3, 7-1-3) earned a share of the conference title.
"I feel for this team and especially for these seniors," Northwestern coach Janet Rayfield said. "Our record and even tonight's loss is not reflective of the ability of this team or the competitive spirit that they exhibit. Some would call it an unlucky year, but you make your own luck. We will work harder than ever before, raise the standards we hold ourselves to and use this season as motivation to make sure we don't just play great soccer in the future but win games as well."
