Fighting Illini halt Hawkeyes
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The Illinois Fighting Illini earned their first road win of the season, halting the Iowa Hawkeyes, 2-1, on Sunday.
"Today was a Big Ten road win where we may not have played our best, but we found a way to grind out the win," Illini (6-10-1 overall, 3-5-1 conference) coach Janet Rayfield said. "These are three points that we had to have, and now we just have to continue to focus on the things we can control: our effort, our training mentality, and taking care of our bodies."
Illinois took the lead as junior Kara Marbury scored her third goal of the season in the 19th minute, finishing to the far post off a cross from redshirt senior Reagan Robishaw. Redshirt senior Taylore Peterson upped the advantage in the 85th minute as IU outshot the Hawkeyes (7-10-0, 1-8-0), 11-8. Natalie Winters cut the deficit in the 88th minute.
