Blue Demon women share Big East title with Marquette


MILWAUKEE -- The DePaul women’s team surrendered the top seed in the Big East Conference tournament to Marquette, falling, 3-2, in extra time to the Golden Eagles at Valley Fields Friday night.

The Blue Demons (10-6-2, 7-2-0 conference) and Golden Eagles (11-6-0, 7-2-0) finished tied for first place, Marquette taking the tiebreaker as Eli Beard scored her first goal of the season in the 91st minute. Both teams earned byes until the semifinals at Georgetown Friday.

Taylor Schissler opened the scoring in the 38th minute with a sliding finished off a Franny Cerny assist. Marquette equalizd as Morgan Proffitt scored the first of her two goals, a low strike in the 42nd minute.

Abby Reed broke the deadlock off a Lucy Edwards assist in the 47th minute, her 11th goal, one short of the DePaul season record she shares with Julianne Sitch and Elise Wyatt. Proffitt again equalized, this time on a penalty kick after a handling call, in the 79th minute.
