Tennessee's Julie Eckel is Women’s Player of the Week
Tennessee sophomore goalkeeper Julie Eckel has been named the Soccer News Net Women's College Player of the Week for the week ending October 21.
Eckel, who also s named SEC Defensive Player of the Week on Monday for the first time in her career, had a dominant weekend in goal to help Tennessee (13-4-2, 8-3-1 SEC) to road wins at No. 9 Texas A&M and Ole Miss.
Eckel was brilliant on Friday as the No. 9 Aggies got off 23 shots, eight more than any other UT opponent has taken this season. The Cordova, Tenn. native made a career-high 11 saves while shutting out one of the strongest attacks in the SEC.
On Sunday, Eckel made four saves and kept the Rebels at bay for the final 82 minutes of the game to allow UT to rally for a 2-1 road win. Ole Miss took nine shots.
Eckel has allowed just 11 goals in 19 games this season. She has a 0.59 GAA, which ranks second in the SEC and 21st in the nation.
