West Virginia junior forward Frances Silva is the Soccer News Net Women’s College Player of the Week for the week ending September 23.
Silva, a native of Overland Park, Kan., scored three goals, including both game-winners as the Mountaineers beat Texas Tech and upset No. 7 Oklahoma State over the weekend.
Against Texas Tech, Silva gave the Mountaineers an early 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute and later connected on the game-winner on a penalty kick after being taken down in the box, giving West Virginia its first Big 12 Conference win, 3-2.
Silva scored her second straight game-winning goal in WVU’s upset win over No. 7 Oklahoma State. She connected with 88 seconds remaining to give the Mountaineers their second win over a top 10 opponent.
Defender Jess Crowder played a ball up to midfield where forward Kate Schwindel touched it on to Silva. Silva beat her defender and raced toward the goal, creating numbers in transition with forward Kelsie Maloney charging up the middle. Silva was able to cut the OSU center back at the top of the box and send a blast into the upper left corner for the game-winner.
Silva currently leads the Big 12 Conference in goals scored with eight. She is tied for the Big 12 lead in points with teammate Kate Schwindel. She has scored seven goals in the last four matches, and became the first Mountaineer to score multiple goals in three consecutive games. West Virginia is 5-0-0 this season when Silva scores a goal.
