Badgers edge Panthers in Wisconsin battle
MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Joana Bielefeld scored the game-winning goal midway through the first overtime period as No. 13 Wisconsin handed the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women a tough 2-1 loss Wednesday evening in front of 1,116 fans at Engelmann Stadium.
The Panthers (1-4-1) took a 1-0 lead in the 58th minute, but were unable to hold on against a Badger (6-1) squad that came into the game averaging nearly three goals per game.
Sammy Vovos scored for UWM, finishing a header off a Kelsey Holbert corner kick. Holbert’s corner cleared the far post, but Hannah Kaul headed a centering ball back in front of goal where Vovos was to finish. Vovos had just entered the game on the corner kick.
Wisconsin seized momentum from that point, launching a number of shots at the Milwaukee goal. Twice a Panther defender cleared a ball off the line, while Jamie Forbes made a handful of spectacular saves. Shortly after thePanthers scored, Kaul came through to block a point-blank shot on an open net, while Sky Perna deflected a shot from inside the far post to keep the game level at 1-1.
Kodee Williams tied the game for the Badgers in the 78th minute, a product of constant pressure. Paige Adams brought a ball down the side line and sent a cross to the far post for Williams to one-time into the net.
The game-winner came in the 96th minute on a corner kick, Wisconsin’s 11th of the game. Kinley McNicoll sent her corner to the middle of the box and Bielefeld headed the ball into the goal.
UW outshot Milwaukee 20-10 and had six more corners (11-5). Forbes finished the game with five saves, while Lauren Gunderson stopped four shots for the Badgers.
