Hoosiers Zavaleta is player of the week

PARK RIDGE, Ill. — Coming off a three-goal performance and a team title at the Billiken Classic, Indiana sophomore forward Eriq Zavaleta is the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week.

Zavaleta tallied his first goal of the year in a 2-1 win over Saint Louis on Friday. With the Hoosiers trailing 1-0, Zavaleta scored the equalizer off a cross from A.J. Corrado into the box.

In Sunday’s 3-0 shutout of Cincinnati, Zavaleta put home his first game winner of the year, giving Indiana a 1-0 lead in the 68th minute. After a Caleb Konstanski score put the Hoosiers up 2-0, Zavaleta iced the match with a penalty kick in the 85th minute after the Bearcats were called for a handball in the penalty area.

It is the third career offensive player of the week award for Zavaleta, who was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 2011 after leading the league in scoring with 10 goals.

Ohio State's Kendyl Reed was named the defensive player of the week after he led the Buckeyes to two shutout victories over Northeastern (3-0) and No. 17 Maryland (1-0)

Buckeye's forward Michela Paradiso was freshman of the week after he registered three assists.
