Marquette nets second win, 1-0 over Green Bay
GREEN BAY, Wis. – A 30th minute goal by Eric Pothast gave Marquette a 1-0 win over Green Bay at Aldo Santaga Stadium, marking the first time the Golden Eagles have opened the season at 2-0-0 since 2000.
Marquette hit the woodwork three times early in the first half before finally capitalizing on a set piece. A free kick taken by Paul Dillon near the center circle found the head of 6-foot-7 Axel Sjoberg. Sjoberg flicked it across the box to Pothast, who volleyed it past Green Bay goalkeeper Ryan Wehking for the decisive score.
Pothast had a header in the 12th minute that hit the crossbar off MU’s first corner kick of the match.
MU rattled off eight shots on goal compared to just one on frame by the Phoenix (1-1-0), but not to say Green Bay didn’t have ample opportunities.
Green Bay had a pair of one-on-one chances bookend the first half, including a shot by Ahmad Bah that went wide of the left post in the opening minutes and a strike by Alonso Flores that was saved by Marquette goalkeeper Charlie Lyon.
The Golden Eagles continued to apply pressure in the second half. Adam Lysak registered three of Marquette’s six shots in the half, including a strike in the 72nd minute that was cleared by the Green Bay defense before Kelmend Islami was able to get to the rebound.
Bah nearly equalized earlier in the half when his shot hit the cross bar from the left corner of the box in the 52nd minute.
The MU victory snapped an eight-game home field winning streak by the Phoenix and Lyon was credited with his first collegiate shutout.
Marquette returns to Valley Fields for more non-conference action this Friday, Aug. 31, when they host to UIC. Kickoff is set for 7:05 p.m. CT.
